Which region of the US has the best rock music scene?
My vote goes for the Southeast, I live in Denver and not too impressed with the local music there. My second vote goes to the Texas local scene (especially Austin). When I lived in the Carolinas, the local music there was unbelievable.
I hear that Memphis is the birthplace of rock…with the first rock vinyl recorded there. I cant wait to go to New Orleans to check out there local music scene, though…alot of talent there from what I hear.

I lived in Memphis for a while and believe it or not Memphis and Nashville are so much more than country music.
Some of the BEST live music, street music, and unknown rap AND country talent you’ll ever hear!

i would have to agree with Amanda L…went to Ozzfest in Nashville and spent time around musicians in Tennessee…that area has some of the best talent for rock in all the places i have been. lots of unsigned band and original material.

Austin. It has a great scene and is growing more and more every year. Houston and Dallas are picking up on it too and have some amazing local bands that tour the state. Texas is pretty awesome, but I’m a little biased since I grew up there and I’m now in the middle of nowhere without any scenes except farmland. =P

My vote goes to the northwest, especially the Seattle area. Seattle boasts past frontrunners Soundgarden, Nirvana, Alice in Chains and Pearl. Aside from the grunge type rock, they have a great local scene with bands like Batter Dean. Seattle has a rich background of grunge rock and has become very strong with straight rock; not overly metal and not too reliant on the red-knuckled sounding guitar lines that (unfotunately) have taken a dominant position in the modern rock band.
If you want to get back to good rock music, where the focus is on great vocals, Seattle in the place!

I think that New York and Pittsburgh both have great music roots. In fact, when they pre-release records to the radio stations to get an idea how they will do, Pittsburgh is often one of the test areas – so alot of new stuff goes through there before it hits the radio waves nation wide. And they have got a ton of garage bands that are starting to make it big. New York just rocks.

well southern has it’s perks, but i really am aheavy metal/ black metal fanatic, and i must say in the states the title has to go to clevlend ohio, they have great scence, most good tours always stop there, and you can find some great places around there and alot of local bands, and artists… but in retrosepct of the world it is to be in stockholm many many grea bands of emerged into the metal scene from there, and two of my top five artists, Opeth, and Children of Bodom

"Rock" covers such a wide range of music.
The South has such a long and rich tradition of musical excellence, and it’s part of daily life there.
The Northeast has some very fine classical rock venues.
The Northwest is home to a lot of new styles of music (Portland has a HUGE indie scene).
California is a conglomeration of many different styles.
Overall, the South has probably produced more quality musicians than anywhere else. But, again, it depends upon what definition of "rock" you’re using.
